TRADITIONAL APPROACH

The traditional educational approach is what many people may picture when asked to imagine someone "doing school". It is built on the assumption that there is a particular body of information that should be covered and mastered over the span of a student's twelve or thirteen years in school. This approach to education is teacher and textbook directed and designed for generic students.

Most traditional approach learning materials are designed for use in conventional classrooms. They typically include textbooks and/or worktexts designed to follow a standardized scope and sequence. The material presented in the textbooks is generally expected to be completed and mastered at a particular grade level within an academic school semester (about 90 days) or year (about 180 days),

Traditional textbooks are likely to have corresponding teacher's manuals, answer keys, tests, workbooks, review materials, and provide suggestions for supplementary materials and enrichment activities. Some have been developed or modified in order to work effectively and efficiently in independent study learning situations. In general they require less planning time and a minimum amount of student supervision by teachers. Homeschoolers who choose to use a traditional textbook-based curriculum are sometimes said to practice "school at home".
