Communications Committee report on Listserves and Return receipts
Listserve plan
A listserve can be set up for parents by county for better networking opportunities. We can add a disclaimer that will go out on all emails that these are not sponsored or endorsed by CWCS. We can moderate who can join the group, so that it is secure for our parents only. We can allow the parents to send messages directly to the group without a moderator approving them. We can allow the ÒchatÓ function to be used by the parents. We can allow them to post items on the calendar. The question is, do we need school personnel to also join the group to monitor the activity for legal reasons? Do we want them split up by county, or smaller groups? Do we need criteria in place that will be used to ÒbanÓ a member that needs to be banned? There is no Òreturn receiptÓ option for the listserve.
Return receipts
Email sent out from the school webmail accounts can be checked for ÒRequest a Return ReceiptÓ. I would suggest we train the ESs to send out official information that we have asked them to pass along to a group of parents using that feature, so they can see who has not read the email within the expected timeframe. Other school personnel sending email out to a specific group could also use this function. If the ESs know how to set up their other email programs, then they could use that email program in place of webmail. The listserve does not have this function for mass emailings.
