Focus Group Meeting Preparation
- The Leadership Group reviewed the focus group
agenda for May.
- The main focus will be to analyze student work samples
using a rubric to evaluate achievement
of the selected expected school wide learning results and targeted
academic standards. Each sample will be evaluated; the rubric stapled
to the sample, and
then turned in to the leader to keep until they are needed.
- Gary will
be editing the rubric that is in the agenda link to include grade evaluations
of below, meets or exceeds. This is not part of the score but added
to the top
of the rubric. If a student gets a high grade on a 3rd grade level assignment
but they are in 7th grade this needs to be noted for accurate evaluation.
If it is lower level work it could be appropriate because it is remedial
or the
student is special ed this should be evaluated. It would be good if we
could show an improvement even if the student is below the standards
for their grade
level.
- A link to the California State standards is available on the Connecting
Waters web site in the Accreditation Data resource section and the May
focus group agenda as well as other places on the site.
- There are student work samples available through a link
in the agenda but the more samples we have the better.
- Catherine Miller will
send out
a sample
email
to leadership members that they can forward to their focus groups. The
email will ask Ess to bring work samples and a copy to be collected to
the focus
group meeting. The focus leader should bring a copy of the standard for
the subject
that the group will focus on.
- Work samples should not have the student’s
name on them. Some of the samples in the agenda link do have the name
still on them leaders should white or black out the student name.
- The
groups led by Cher, Tammy, Nancy, Catherine, and Ingrid will focus on English
Language Arts. The groups led by Marsha, Dave, Theresa, Rolff, and Pat Nesbitt
will focus
on Mathematics. Sherri will get work samples to Pat and Ingrid.
Responsibility
of the Leadership Group
- Group will write a report that will be added to
a binder that will be presented to WASC in January.
- The visiting team that
comes in March will check on the
things claimed in the report. The parent/student groups do not
have to write a report.
- The goal is to have a draft of the report completed
in the summer and then we would just add to it through out the year until
it is sent
in January.
- Reports will be written by leaders or someone from the group
that would be interested
in writing. Leaders will ask their groups if anyone would be
interested in doing
the writing over the summer for a possible stipend. Leaders
will forward the names to Sherri for consideration.
- A designee from one
focus group
could collaborate
with the designee of the other and do the writing. Each writer
will be given the criteria questions and samples of formats and
reports from
other schools.
