Question: How to provide English Language Development curriculum to a non-English speaking student?
ELD Strategies and Suggestions –
*Classes at local
learning center to develop vocabulary development
Ex.) Reader’s Theater, Writing Classes, Hands on Science, Arts & Crafts
*Classes
through local adult school/community colleges
Ex.) Waterford School District and Turlock School District offer ELD classes
*ES
sets up peer tutoring partners/groups
Ex.) find somewhere in the community – parks, public library, etc.
*Text
books/curriculum in home language;
Ex.) Steck/Vaughn; American Guidance Service; Houghton-Mifflin
*Jr. High/High School leveled published text, English for Students of Spanish/Spanish for Students of English for grammar development
*Published audio tapes titled -Basic English Conversation at commercial book stores;
*Contact California Department of Education Clearing House to provide any state adopted text books on audio tape
*Offer SDAIE (Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English) curricular
activities to promote oral language
Ex.)watch a news broadcast and orally tell your ES what happened;
listen to audio books and re-tell what happened;
life skills projects – find a local hospital, make a doctor appointment,
open a checking/savings account;
set up times of the day with in the household where only English is used;
SRA Reading Comprehension series
Promising Practices Recommended Implementation –
*LEP students should be placed under AESS contract
*LEP students must be placed with CLAD certified ES
*ES must be truthful with parents about ability/services our charter school can provide with limited resources
*Evaluate data regarding identified ESL students to see how many and who passed CAHSEE
*Look at number of ESL students per grade level to identify percentages within our population – Do we need to create a Bilingual Advisory Committee?
*Enrollment/Initial paperwork provided in Spanish
*Locate State ELD Standards printed in Spanish parent friendly versions
