This 5 unit Life Skills course is mandatory
for all 9th graders.
The course allows students to answer: Who am I? What do I want? How do I get there? Students will use self evaluation tools
and will research careers to begin to develop a ten year plan! Textbook
– Career Choices: A Guide for Teens and Young Adults by Academic
Innovations, available for all 9th graders in August at the MLC,
CLC, or All ES Meeting. This text is
required for the online or in person class. NOTE: this course can be
taken as an Independent Study course using the recommended text or other
preferred materials/textbook. Independent Study students must complete and
turn in a “Career Portfolio” to be graded by your ES,
details can be found online on the Guidance page.

This class is Semester 2 of Education and Career Planning for students wanting more guidance in Career planning, job seeking skills, and budgeting. A large part of the class will focus on personal finance. Students will also be encouraged to tour another college and participate in the county Olympics for Job seeking skills. |

Independent Study – students will follow the Independent
Study course outline, completing the course on their own, and will submit a career
portfolio to their ES for 25% of the semester grade. Student work during the
semester according to this pacing guide (or equivalent) comprises the other
75% of Independent Study Student’s grade.

For the 2009-10 school year, this course will be offered to 11th
and 12th graders as a Life Skills elective option, and will be
worth a total of 10 units (semester 1=Education and Career Planning, 5 units
and semester 2= Education and Career Planning with Internship, 5 units). Students will find and complete a short
internship. Students also learn about
careers, job skills, and budgeting.

prepare for the SAT exam. College-bound students should take the PSAT during your Sophomore and
Junior year. You could qualify for the
NMSQT scholarship program which is only available to juniors who score well
on the PSAT |

Department explains the test results and assists students in understanding
